The golden double in 1996

“Slavia”’s greatest success in recent years was in 1996. The “whites” with Stoyan Kotsev in the lead managed to make a dream come true for generations of fans by winning the Cup. What is more, “Slavia” won and the National Cup. They did this with courage and a will to victory. In the beginning of the season no one considered the “whites” very seriously, and they really did set off badly. Two losses were put down in the first three rounds but gradually the team came round and took part in the competitions for the top places. In the half season the team was sharing third-fourth position and was lagging behind with whole five points. In the beginning of the spring half, after some mistakes on the part of “Levski”’s leader and the brilliant performance of “Slavia”, team and fans dared to dream for something more than just winning medals. The “whites” were a homogenous whole, in which everybody had an important role. There wasn’t any weak position in “Slavia”’s selection, and the easily replaceable roles among the players and the strong collective were a guarantee for triumphs. So a series of 16 consecutive matches without loss followed, and after three brilliantly played drawsin the final games, the Cup was won.  A well deserved success, an achievement belonging to the whole team, as well as to the club’s governing body that provided everything needed for the pursuit and attainment of the ultimate goal of “Slavia”! Meanwhile, “Slavia” defeated many teams in the race for The National Cup. And the final against “Slavia”’s oldest rival – “Levski”, was a fact on 1stMay. “Slavia” was leading in the score but 12-13 minutes before the end of the game, “Levski” left the stadium. The Cup was “white”! A golden double was achieved. A triumph of “Slavia”’s everlasting spirit!
